Ospreys, the distinctive “fish hawks” of the Great Lakes, are a conservation success story. These large raptors nest near lakes, rivers, and shorelines where they can dive feet-first for fish. After crashing in the mid-1900s due to DDT-caused eggshell thinning, populations rebounded strongly following the pesticide ban and targeted recovery efforts (including artificial nest platforms and reintroductions in places like southern Michigan). Today they are a familiar and welcome sight soaring over Great Lakes waters each summer before migrating south for the winter.
